Multimedia Math Interview Assignment

How Someone in My Life Uses Math

What do I do?  Find an adult to interview about how they use math in their lives. They could talk about the math they use in their job, with a hobby or running a household.

How do I do it? This assignment must have a media component.(sound, video or photos)

(*you do not need to buy any electronic equipment, I can lend whatever you need*)

Choice#1- Take pictures with a digital camera-(I have one to borrow if you need it)

Choice #2- Record them talking with an ipod/ipad, tape recorder, computer, digital recorder (I have one to borrow),

Choice #3- Video Record with a camera. (most digital cameras take video clips)

Create a Power Point slideshow, then bring the person in and interview them while we watch the presentation.

You could also combine any of the above options. For example, take pictures and record the person talking, then put them together into a video with moviemaker.

How do I bring the recordings / pictures to school?

Email the pictures to the class email- delliot@sd47.bc.ca

Borrow a usb memory key from Mr E and transfer pictures or videos onto it.

Bring the camera and I will transfer the photos or video onto the class computers

( any equipment brought to school will be locked up when not in use)

What do I record, take pictures of or video record?  Take pictures of them doing the activities that they talk about in your interview. They could even take pictures at their work if they are talking about their job.

Which questions do I ask?

They will be a little different for each person. We will develop a list of questions in class.

Some questions that everyone will ask:

1-What kind of math do you use? (adding, subtracting,  multiplication, , division)

2- Give me two examples of how you use math?

3- What are some large numbers you deal with?

4- Do mistakes ever occur? Why or why not? What happens then?

5- Do you use any special equipment to do math? Computer programs, tools, calculators?
